A Bit of History

When I arrived in Sun City, 1984, the racquetball courts were considerably different than |
they are today. The floors were concrete and the courts were three walls with a screen in |
the rear to keep stray balls from bouncing into the hall or onto the tennis courts. the courts |
were not air conditioned, but Sun Citians played through the summer anyway. |
|
Charley Osborn and I had never seen a racquetball court before, but decided that the game |
could be a lot of fun. We bought some eye protection, a racquet, and some racquetballs. We |
vowed to meet when no one else was around, but eventually we were caught and some of the |
players invited us to join them. I remember those fine gentlemen players such as Doc G., |
Lou B., John C., Don L., and later on a couple of gentlemen from merry old England, Dennis C. |
and Bill B. As bad as Charlie and I were, they still let us join them. |
|
I don't really know who should get the credit for asking the recreational board to upgrade |
the courts, but I would guess that Don L. helped it along. What a change when the back walls |
were installed, the floors were covered with wood, and the courts were enclosed so they |
could be air conditioned. |
|
The game also changed. The back wall made all the difference in the world. The older players |
took it all in stride and continued to play through the years until one by one they had to quit |
due to knee or shoulder problems, or moving away. |
|
Today we have these great courts and many new players enjoying the game, all the while |
becoming more physically and mentally fit for a long life in Sun City. |
